Why is there Ice in Your Walk-In Freezer?
A properly functioning, well-maintained commercial walk-in freezer will hold a steady temperature with low humidity at all times. However, you may suddenly spot ice beginning to collect in certain parts of the freezer, which is usually a sign that something isn’t quite right.
This is usually caused by the entry of warmer, humid air entering the freezers and causing ice formation. In some businesses, due to excessive opening of freezers, humid air starts to build up inside. But in more serious cases, it could indicate a problem with the sealing gaskets on the doors. Leaks can also be found in walk in doors and hinges.
Pay special attention to how personnel use walk-in freezers. It is always advisable to enter and exit quickly, making sure the door is not left open too long. Putting a sign to remind staff of freezer door policy during restocking and training them to make less frequent trips to critical cold storage will also make a significant difference
Alternately, a faulty pressure relief port can quite easily contribute to ice build-up. Heated pressure relief ports prevent pressure accumulation inside freezers, so if you find that the door is becoming difficult to open, it could signal an issue with the relief ports which can contribute to ice build-up.
Ice build-up is also caused by other factors which can be identified and repaired by licensed professionals with technical expertise.
Prevent Ice Build-Up in Walk-In Freezers
Check Gaskets Regularly
Even small gaps and cracks in gaskets can cause air flow issues which lead to icing. Our recommendation is to stay ahead of the problem and check gaskets weekly to ensure proper sealing. A simple way to perform DIY repairs on a gasket is to use industry-approved silicone caulk to deal with minor problems.
Door Inspection
Refrigerator doors are often the weakest link as they undergo a great deal of usage and are prone to mechanical issues. Performing regular maintenance on door hinges, hydraulic systems and other components can help identify problems before they cause air flow issues. If you find that the gasket of the door is freezing onto the door frame, it may be time to replace the door’s heater wire.
Check Pressure Relief Port
To check the pressure relief port, unscrew the faceplates on the interior and exterior to check for ice blockage or electrical failure. Depending on the problem, you may need to repair or replace your current relief port. Contact a professional refrigeration expert to conduct a proper check of your wiring and equipment.
Poor Insulation Material
If your walk-in freezer is over 10 years old, your insulation material may be saturated with ice or water. This tells us that the panel is unable to provide effective insulation and is adding to your energy costs. If water leaks from the panels when the freezer is turned off, it means that ice is building up inside.
